Springbok No 8 Duane Vermeulen has revealed the main reason for his return to South Africa at the end of May.
Vermeulen, who is currently contracted to the Kubota Spears in Japan, has signed a contract with the Bulls, who he played for in last year's Super Rugby tournament.
While the 33-year-old hopes being back in South Africa will boost his chances of playing for the Springboks against the British & Irish Lions in 2021, he told Rapport newspaper his family was the main factor behind the decision to come home.
Vermeulen's wife Ezel and their young sons, Anru (who is in Grade 1) and Zian (3), remained in Cape Town when he went to Japan.
The No 8 said he wanted to spend more time with his family and be part of Anru's school activities.
'My wife also can't do everything and still run her own business,' he said. 'It's hard, you're not together and I can't leave her alone.
'And then, when one looks at what lies ahead in rugby, it is the British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa next year that will be the big thing. I will see if I can make that [Bok] team. It will be a fantastic experience.'
