Why Boks won’t be visiting Bloem on Trophy Tour

Springbok fans in Bloemfontein won’t be able to see their heroes and the Webb Ellis Cup during the Trophy Tour but could do so at a later stage.

The Boks visited Pretoria, Joburg and Soweto on Thursday. They will be in Durban on Friday, before travelling to East London (Saturday), Port Elizabeth (Sunday) and Cape Town (Monday).

The notable omission on the travel itinerary is Bloemfontein, which hasn’t been included for logistical reasons as well as challenges relating to World Rugby’s Regulation 9 that requires players to return to their contracted entities (clubs and franchises) on Monday.

However, Free State Rugby Union president Jerry Segwaba said they had spoken to SA Rugby about bringing the Webb Ellis Cup to Bloemfontein in the near future.

‘After discussions with Saru and after unbridled demand from rugby supporters, the general public and government, Saru has indicated to us that they will possibly send the trophy and a number of players to the central region at a later stage.’
