‘Sharks players are selected purely on merit’

Sharks coach Sean Everitt says he’s never had to pick players of colour just to make up the transformation numbers.

The Sharks had eight players of colour in their starting XV that beat the Highlanders in Dunedin last Friday – six of who were black Africans – and another on the bench.

Over the past weekend, the Stormers started with seven players of colour (four on the bench), the Bulls six (two on the bench) and the Lions four (three on the bench).

‘It’s got nothing to do with doing anything intentionally and that’s from a development point of view as well,’ Everitt said when asked about the racial makeup of his team.

‘The players that we have at the Sharks are selected purely on merit and I’ve never once had to look at the numbers to select the team.

‘Whether I’ve been coaching at juniors or seniors, they’ve always been there and I believe that they’re the best in their position and warrant their selection on merit.’

The Sharks will play the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday (08:05 SA time).
