The 2020 Super Rugby season could resume in the near future in a different guise.
Sanzaar CEO Andy Marinos said on Sky Sport NZ rugby show The Breakdown
on Tuesday that a regionalised solution to getting games underway again is being considered.
This would presumably see local derbies being played in each of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, while no international travel is possible.
Depending on the coronavirus situation in each country and restrictions on public gatherings, matches may have to be played behind closed doors which, while not ideal, would at least allow the show to go on.
Meanwhile, NZ Rugby CEO Mark Robinson told The Breakdown that there is 10-12 weeks of domestic rugby that could feature on Sky Sport NZ in place of Super Rugby, if need be.
