Olympic Games blow for Blitzboks

The Blitzboks will have to wait another year to challenge for the rugby sevens men's gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. On Tuesday, the decision was made to postpone the Olympics, which were set to be held from 24 July to 9 August, to a date no later than 2021. This came after a meeting between Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe and International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach amid the global coronavirus pandemic. Coach Neil Powell said while the Blitzboks were disappointed, everyone understood the situation. 'This is also a reminder of the seriousness and the scale of the pandemic,' he added. 'We'll do whatever is needed to play our part in curbing this pandemic and make sure we adhere to the requirements as set down by the national government.' The Blitzboks will go into full lockdown later this week, as required by government, and will re-start training again in the next month if all goes according to plan.
