The Golden Lions moved to the top of the Currie Cup log with a 27-26 win against Griquas in Kimberley on Saturday. SIMON BORCHARDT reports.

The bonus-point win takes the Lions up to 22 log points, with Griquas’ two bonus points seeing them finish with 21.

Griquas will be disappointed not to have won this match, having fought back from 19-0 down to lead 26-24. But a Shaun Reynolds penalty edged the Lions back in front and while the hosts could have had a late penalty-goal attempt, they played on and, with the referee having signalled advantage over, knocked on.

Griquas signalled their attacking intentions early on by running the ball from close to their own tryline. After the ball went through several pairs of hands, André Swarts’ pass to Eduan Keyter was knocked on with an open line.

The Lions then opened the scoring when Stean Pienaar intercepted a speculative pass from Neill Jordaan and raced away.

The winger thought he had grabbed his second in the 14th minute, but the TMO ruled he had lost control of the ball while attempting to ground it.

The Lions did get their second try through Tyrone Green and when Madosh Tambwe finished off an excellent attack late in the half they led 19-0.

Griquas had to score next and they did, in the 40th minute, when their forwards mauled their way up to the line and Gideon van der Merwe went over from close range. AJ le Roux scored in similar fashion 10 minutes into the second half and with George Whitehead slotting both conversions, the deficit was down to five.

The hosts took the lead for the first time when Wilmar Arnoldi scored, but the Lions hit back with  Pienaar’s second try.

Griquas went back in front with a brilliant try that was finished off by Van der Merwe after a powerful run by Nqobisizwe Mxoli. But Reynolds slotted a penalty for the Lions, which proved to be the difference between the sides.
