Gwigo Squad will be bringing the noise to Loftus!

Founder and chairman of the Gwijo Squad CHULUMANCO MACINGWANE talks to about their plans for Saturday’s Test between the Springboks and Argentina at Loftus.

The Gwijo Squad tweeted on Wednesday that all its spots had been taken for Saturday’s Test. You must be pleased?
Yes, especially considering we got going quite late for this Test. At the beginning of the year, we decided to give this Test a miss but after Ellis Park [when the Springboks played the Wallabies] the overwhelming sentiment in the group was that we had to go to Loftus.

What are the Gwijo Squad’s plans for before the game?
As usual, we will meet at Eighty-Six Public in Randburg for a quick drinking session and to finalise our logistics. We will then get on the busses and head to Pretoria. Loftus is a bit of a challenge because it doesn’t allow drinking in the stands, which can be a bit of a dampener. But it’s not a train smash. Those who want to drink can have pre-drinks at Eighty-Six Public and get to Loftus well lubricated and ready to bring the noise!

Can we expect some new songs from the Gwijo Squad on Saturday?
There are invariably new songs. They spring up across the Xhosa culture and you would be hard-pressed to find out where they came from. There’s just a constant supply of igwijo and people become enamoured with these ‘new releases’.

Will the Gwijo Squad be visiting the Bok hotel this week?
Yes, we will be heading through to their hotel [Southern Sun Pretoria] on Thursday to announce ourselves. We’ve spoken to the Springboks and they have given us the green light. We know Siya Kolisi appreciates us coming over but I’m not sure whether he will be able to join us outside the hotel as he will probably be playing on Saturday. I’m sure a couple of the players will, though.
